What to Wear Between Summer and Autumn: AW26 Style Advice

Late summer can be one of the most enjoyable—and sometimes most confusing—times to dress. The days may still be warm, but the first Autumn/Winter collections are arriving and bringing new colours, fabrics and silhouettes into focus.

The answer is not to dress for winter too early. Instead, choose versatile pieces that feel right now and can be layered differently as the weather changes. Here are five ways to begin introducing AW26 into your wardrobe.

1. Begin with a new-season shirt

A beautifully cut shirt is one of the easiest pieces to wear between seasons. It provides enough coverage for cooler mornings without feeling too heavy when the temperature rises later in the day.

For AW26, look for fluid fabrics, clean shapes and considered details. Shirts from designers including Frame, Essentiel Antwerp and Joseph can be worn now with denim or tailored trousers, then layered beneath knitwear and jackets as autumn develops.

Ivory and winter white offer a fresh alternative to darker autumn shades, while deep blue, green and softly patterned styles bring colour without overwhelming an outfit.

2. Update your denim

Denim gives new-season pieces an immediate, relaxed quality. A modern pair of jeans can balance a more polished blouse, jacket or statement top and make it easier to wear throughout the week.

The AW26 direction includes straight, relaxed and subtly wider shapes alongside more tailored denim. Frame and Paige offer contemporary fits that work with shirts, lighter knitwear and jackets.

For a simple transitional outfit, combine blue denim with an ivory shirt and add a belt or structured bag. As the weather cools, the same foundation can be worn with a jacket or lightweight coat.

3. Introduce autumn colour gradually

You do not need to move directly from summer colour into black and grey. This season’s palette includes rich but wearable shades that sit beautifully alongside familiar wardrobe neutrals.

Mahogany is emerging as an important AW26 colour. It works particularly well with cream, denim, dark green and muted blue. Patina introduces a softened green tone, while deep blue, brown and mauve offer alternatives to traditional winter shades.

The simplest approach is to introduce one new-season colour at a time. A blouse, trouser, dress or accessory can update an existing outfit without requiring a complete wardrobe change.

4. Make tailoring feel relaxed

Modern tailoring does not need to feel formal. A well-cut trouser or jacket can be styled with a simple top, shirt or trainer to create an outfit that feels polished but easy to wear.

Joseph’s clean silhouettes are particularly suited to this approach, while Mos Mosh brings a relaxed quality to contemporary tailoring. Look for separates that can be worn together but also work independently with pieces already in your wardrobe.

A tailored trouser with a lightweight shirt is ideal for late summer. Later in the season, add a coordinating jacket, fine knit or coat.

5. Keep dresses working beyond summer

Dresses remain useful long after the height of summer, particularly when the shape and fabric allow for easy layering.

Printed dresses from Hale Bob bring colour and personality, while more understated new-season styles can be worn with trainers or loafers now and layered beneath a jacket as temperatures fall.

Rather than putting summer dresses away immediately, consider which colours can connect with your AW26 wardrobe. A dress containing blue, green, brown or ivory can often be restyled with a new-season layer or accessory.

Building a transitional wardrobe

The most useful wardrobes are not separated rigidly by season. They contain pieces that work together and can be adapted as the weather changes.

At Pampas, we buy across different designers with complete outfits in mind. Colour, proportion and fabric connect the collection, allowing a shirt from one designer to work with trousers, denim or a jacket from another.

Our experienced team can help you identify the shapes and colours that suit you, build outfits around pieces you already own and choose new arrivals that will remain useful throughout the season.
